Toy Story 3 Still Toping The Charts!

Toy Story 3 has been on the shelf for months but is still toping the sales charts for DVD sales. This stalwart of the industry is in line to break some records if it can keep up its extreme pace of sales.

The Toy Story series has always captured the imagination of children and adults but the latest movie in the series seems to really be connecting with families around the world. While a plethora of kids movies have been put out since the first Toy Story came out, nothing seems to be able to hold its own against Tom Hanks' blockbuster.

While the rest of the market ends up finding itself as discount DVD movies within weeks of its release, this monster has been able to stay well away from such a fate, and is largely able to keep the same asking price as the day it was released.

Tom Hanks made his name acting in some hugely popular movies from Philadelphia to Castaway and, his latest blockbuster, the DaVinci Code. But it seems that he really came into his own with the Toy Story series.

This wonderful series follows a group of living toys through their adventures of life as the humans around them continually shift their world in directions unknown! Although the toys have to pretend to be lifeless when their humans come around, they have their own unique lives and characters and the interaction between them creates new challenges for them to deal with!

As a fan of the Toy Story series myself, I can say without reservation that this series is a modern classic. And while the kids movies of the 90's was largely dominated by Disney, the children's' movie scene of the "Aughts" has been dominated by Pixar and other small studios.

Their constant creativity has kept most of their creations on the top shelf and away from being sold as discount DVD s.
While Disney has picked up Pixar and made it part of its corporate structure, it has largely retained its autonomy, and this has lead to extremely original and creative movies.

Toy Story 3 continues to lead the show, but I'm sure that we haven't seen the last of either Tom Hanks or the Pixar team. We can only hope that they are able to keep their originality, and will continue to drive us wild with the next modern classic!

Thinking Of Selling Pirated DVD's? Don't Do It At Walmart.

According to naplesnews.com a couple were arrested with over 400 DVDs while trying to sell the media at their local Walmart. The 400 DVDs were suspected of being "pirate" DVDs which means that they may be guilty of copyright infringement and the myriad of laws associated with infringement.

The deputies apparently got in contact with MPRIA investigators who will work with the deputies during the investigation.

Before the arrest, the deputies asked the man what he was doing to which he responded that he was waiting for his girlfriend to come out of Walmart. He later changed his story to say that he was selling the discount DVDs out of his car in the parking lot.

If I was a judge and could see the circumstances of this situation, I could see that these two were not hardened criminals, and hardly criminals at all. Trying to find a way to make some money during hard times, these two took a rational approach to creating a business.

"What do people buy lots of?" DVDs. "Where are there lots of people buying DVDs?" Walmart. "Let's go sell discount DVDs at Walmart!"

These 2 didn't run some huge internet scam; they didn't start a store front and pawn off their copyrighted material on thousands of people. These two barely put their feet in the waters of crime, but they may drown in the consequences of these small actions

The laws around copyright infringement in this country could easily be dubbed punishment beyond the crime inflicted. The men and women convicted of these crimes often do jail time, which takes away more than just the time that they are in the detention center. The rest of their life has been altered by this one circumstance, but their one lapse of judgement when it came to trying to take advantage of opportunity; of trying to sell discount DVDs.

Whatever can be said of individuals who break copyright infringement laws, one thing is without question. They are not violent offenders, they are white collar criminals in the truest sense of the world. They do not harm people, they harm entities and profit streams.

The way we treat these offenders of profit is an obvious reflection of the priorities of a nation hell-bent on making more money in any way possible.

Change In Format Means Little For Hollywood, Movies Today, TV Tomorrow

An article on contactmusic.com shows the shifting landscape of the movie market in 6 words, movies give way to tv shows. The top DVD seller for the week isn't the latest blockbuster to come to DVD but ABC's Lost The Complete Sixth Season.

While there have been some blockbuster surprises, Inception comes to mind, many of the movies that has come from Hollywood lately has been pretty old, reworked plots.

There has been a pretty solid move from even A level actors to be willing to work in TV as there has never been before. In the past it was always the arena of B level actors looking for a boost in their acting career, but it has now become its own career path for a professional actor.

As theater ticket sales fall , rental stores go out of business , and online theft killing the last bastion of online DVD sales, it seems like TV is about the only place for actors to go in the future. The one bright sector of the industry is sales of discount dvds, but this low profit sector doesn't drive much industry.

When the history of Hollywood is written, it may be that the aptly named Titanic was the peak of its influence and resplendency in Post Cold War American society. Although the film itself cost tens of millions to make, it raked in 10 times or more in the theater alone, and went on to continue its path of through DVD sales and rentals. It is still asking and getting near original purchase price, and having no problem staying off the discount dvds list.

Such a goliath could never be considered in this current atmosphere, and with good reason, it wouldn't make much profit.

But even with such a shift in the media market, essentially all that is shifting is the format that a plot line is delivered. The movie format is about 80-200 minutes long, uninteruped plot line, while the "TV" format is between 30-60 minutes of interupted plot line put into a serial form that together form seasons. Of course even with all my talk of the "death of Hollywood" many TV programs are created in Hollywood as well.

So what's shifting in the world of DVDs? How people purchase them, or more to the point virtually only buy discount dvds online, and how many series you have to buy before you finally get to the end of the plot .

Austerity Package Driving Sales Of Blu-Rays Lower In Europe

A new report shows that unlike in the US, Blu-ray Disc movies and players are not becoming a trend internationally.

Screen Digest, based in London, states that of those that purchased a Blu-ray player or Sony PlayStation 3 by the end of 2009, only 1.5 Blu-ray movies were bought . The numbers were partially blamed on the Worldwide Recession and the Euro Austerity Packages . But even with these trends taken into condition, total buying is less than postulateed.

2009 total consumer spending on packaged media fell 2.9% to $17.1 billion.

With people more apt to buy discount DVDs sales of more pricey items like Blu-Rays have fallen in harder hit areas like Europe.

In direct contrast, 2009 gross sales of Blu-ray movies increased 70% in the United States, creating over $1.5 billion in revenue according to The Digital Entertainment Group.

Helen Davis Jayalath, Screen Digest top video analyst stated , “The failure of the Blu-ray format to capture enough of the foreign market in 2009 means this downward trend is now set to continue, with the short-term uplift in video spending that we had previously expect to see in 2010-2011 now unlikely to materialize.”

Screen Digest is forecasting International consumer spending on DVD/Blu-ray movies to slump to $14.5 billion by 2014, an average turn down of 3.5% every 12 months . It also appears to imply that Blu-ray movies will take the brunt of this drop .

“For many people, it seems, DVD remains ‘good enough’ for most titles and the additional cost of opting for a hi-def BD version simply cannot be justified in the current climate of austerity,” the report concluded. The increased presence of discount DVDs puts more pressure on the Blu-Ray market.

The report seemed to downplay data which displayed that the European DVD/Blu-ray market saw a 2.3% overall sales rise to $1.9 billion in the first quarter of 2010. It stated that strong local conditions and a strong first quarter offer from Hollywood was foundation to the increase; not a overall strengthening in the sector.

“As long as deep discounting of the standard-definition format by the supermarkets continues, Blu-ray adoption in Europe will continue to be slow because the price differential is simply too large for most consumers to justify in today’s climate of austerity,” Davis Jayalath stated .
